Have you ever thought about protecting your ears before? No? Then you're not alone. It’s easy to forget that everyday noises can impact your hearing. In this section you can find out more about the impact of noise and how you can protect your hearing.

Why should I protect my hearing?

Think about it – your eyelids can close in a fraction of second, but your ears have no way to protect themselves. There’s no way to deliberately shut off your hearing – your ears are always ready to pick up sounds, including loud ones. This means that with regular or one-off loud noises, your hearing can suffer.

What impacts can loud noises have?

You might be surprised by the sounds that can have a long-term effect on your hearing! Loud music at concerts, noise from DIY work at home, traffic noise… these can quickly impact your hearing. In fact, noise-related hearing loss affects more and more people than ever.
Persistent noise doesn’t just affect your ears. Every loud noise puts your body into a state of alert, which makes your heart beat faster, increases your blood pressure and makes your breathing rapid. Some long-term effects might even be concentration problems, sleep problems, high blood pressure and even heart conditions.

But the good news is that with the right hearing protection, you can prevent this!

Do I need hearing protection?

Each person is affected by noise differently, and the volume at which noise becomes a problem varies for everyone. Street noise, engine noise, or even a gig or concert where the sound is over 80 decibels (dB) can be trouble.

How can I protect my hearing?

There are some simple things you can do to help make sure your hearing is protected...
Turn it down!
Whether it’s the radio, TV, or your phone, quieter is better!
Fewer noises at once
More than one conversation at once, or playing music over the sound of electrical appliance, can strain your ears.
Buy quieter appliances!
Whether it’s a washing machine, dishwasher, or fridge, take a look at the decibel rating when you’re buying a new electrical appliance. The lower the rating, the quieter it will be, and the better it is for your ears!
Keep your distance!
Staying further away from the source of loud noises will help.
Wear hearing protection!
If you’re doing something noisy like mowing the lawn or sawing wood, you should always wear hearing protection. A circular saw can be as loud as 110 dB, which is enough to cause damage!
By following these simple tips, you can keep your ears healthier for longer, so you won’t miss a thing!

What types of hearing protection are there?

Phonak Serenity Choice™

Phonak Serenity Choice™ generic hearing protection for occasional use.
These protective earplugs come in three standard sizes, with different filters for each application.
A wide range of applications: music, motorsport, work, shooting & hunting, comfort, sleep. Here are the different categories are outlined below:

Serenity Choice™ Comfort

Serenity Choice™ Comfort universal fit hearing protection is developed to reduce all these sounds to an acceptable level. Conversations fade into the background and telephone ringing as well as noise from airplanes, trains, etc. becomes less intrusive. However you can hear conversations if you choose to, so you’ll never feel isolated or occluded.

Serenity Choice™ Comfort is a discrete noise reduction ear plug designed to be worn all day without causing irritation. While other office hearing protection can sound muffled and unnatural, Office filters provide full frequency sound reduction. The advanced technology membrane filter design keeps an open air passage to the ear, minimizing the occlusion effect while keeping the ear ventilated for optimum comfort.

Serenity Choice™ Sleep

Serenity Choice™ Sleep is designed to allow air to enter the ear. This has two advantages over competing products;

- Limits or stops that uncomfortable ‘hot’ irritation feeling in your ear.
- Helps reduce the feeling of ‘hearing your pulse’ caused by restricting blood flow in the ear, especially noticeable when laying on your side.

Sleeping with ear tips will take a little getting used to, as it can sound unnaturally quiet for the first night. After that you’ll wonder why you didn’t use them earlier.

Serenity Choice™ Music

Serenity Choice™ Music has been designed specifically for musicians, music lovers and concert goers. The patented membrane filter technology provides a tuned, flat attenuation response so all frequencies are reduced by almost the same level, great for music as the listener loses nothing of the original sound, it’s just brought down to a safe level, making Serenity Choice™ Music the best high fidelity universal ear tips on the market.

Serenity Choice™ Music provides an open air passage to the ear, minimising occlusion effect (low frequency emphasis) while keeping the ear ventilated for optimum comfort. Designed primarily for music applications Serenity Choice™ Music is also suitable for any noisy environments protection applications.

Serenity Choice™ Motorsport

Noise levels in a motorcycle helmet at 100 kmh are typically 95-105 dB. This is far above the widely accepted safe noise exposure level of 85 dB, meaning you have between 15 minutes and 2 hours of riding before you risk tinnitus or other noise induced hearing loss symptoms. Serenity Choice™ Motorsport reduces wind noise down to safe levels, which means you can concentrate on the road.

Designed to fit into the ear and without catching the helmet liner, Serenity Choice™ Motorsport is discrete reusable, universal fit hearing protector for helmet-generated noise, reducing it to safe levels yet still allowing speech to be heard from intercom speakers. The product provides an open-air passage to the ear, minimizing occlusion effect while keeping the ear ventilated for optimum comfort.

General grime and road dirt will affect protective performance. Serenity Choice™ Motorsport overcomes this by being fully washable. Regular cleaning in warm water will ensure you receive the best performance from your hearing protection.

Serenity Choice™ Work

Serenity Choice™ Work is reusable universal fit hearing protection designed as Personal Protection Equipment for noisy working environments such machine shops, farming, road building and construction or any situation where health and safety requires the use of hearing protection i.e. where noise levels are above the safe limit of 85 dB.

Serenity Choice™ Work reduces the sound level by 24 dB making it safe for 8 hours continuous use in any environment up to 109 dB. Serenity Choice™ Work can be combined with earmuffs in very loud situations where double protection is a requirement.

While other hearing protection can sound muffled and unnatural, Serenity Choice™ Work provides an air passage to the ear, minimizing the occlusion effect while keeping the ear ventilated for optimum comfort.
